Hurst Reunion, Corydon, Indiana

Dear Hurst Descendant:

The Hursts were prominent in the Corydon area. John Hurst built one of the first mills in Harrison County. Several Hursts fought with General William Henry Harrison at the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811. John Hurst Jr. was the first elected sheriff of Harrison County in 1812. Capt. John signed a petition for Indiana to become a State, and in 1816, Corydon became the first State Capital. These and many other events are recorded in two booklets entitled "Hurst Stories" and will be available at the reunion.

John Hurst, commonly known as "Captain John," was the son of William (Brindle Bill) Hurst. Tradition tells us that William was one of three brothers that came from England with their father, Henry, early in the 1700's. They settled in Virginia near the current city of Culpepper. John Hurst and his large family later moved, becoming among the first families to settle in Tennessee, Kentucky, and eventually Indiana.

We had other Hurst Reunions in 1996 and 1998. Both attracted nearly 100 people from 12 states. This one will be the biggest and the best. Several things are planned including participating in the Corydon Old Capitol Day Parade on Saturday, an evening meal together, and a visit to the Hurst Cemetery. Old Hurst artifacts and memorabilia will be on display. Of course, there will be opportunities to exchange genealogy information and to be updated on all the latest news regarding Hurst history.

If you are interested in attending, it is important that you contact me as soon as possible. More information will be sent as the reunion draws near. The best way to contact me is via e-mail (erichurst@indy.rr.com) mail. So, if you have a computer, please let me know your e-mail address.

I hope to hear from you all real soon.

Sincerely,

Eric Hurst
